HISTORY
Here you will find historical notes about the territory of Monterotondo and its ancient roots. During the Roman period the town did not yet exist, but the area was full of life, serving as a vital crossroads for commercial traffic along the Via Salaria and Via Nomentana, in a territory dominated by the Sabine civilisations of Crustumerium, Nomentum and Eretum, which were later absorbed into the Roman world.
Centuries later, these lands witnessed the passage of pilgrims along the Via Francigena who, making their way down from France and detouring towards the sacred sites of Saint Francis of Assisi, passed through here on their journey to Rome. Monterotondo was born in the Middle Ages around a fortress built circa 1100, later transformed into a baronial palace by the powerful Orsini family.
Finally, Monterotondo is linked to a defining chapter of our Risorgimento. It is remembered for the celebrated passage of Giuseppe Garibaldi and for the historic Battle of Monterotondo, in which the red shirts defeated the papal troops.
